What is GEO? Content optimization for AI search

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) means preparing your content to be cited as a source in AI searches like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. We explain how GEO differs from SEO, why it matters now, and the first steps.

Search is no longer just ten blue links. When a user asks a question, ChatGPT, Gemini or Google AI Overviews often write the answer themselves and cite a few sources beneath it. GEO is about being visible on exactly this new surface.

What is GEO?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of making your content understandable, trustworthy and citable by AI-powered search experiences. The goal is not to rank at the top of a result list; it is to be cited as a source inside the answer the AI generates.

In short: SEO says "find me," while GEO says "use me in your answer." They are not rivals; GEO sits on top of SEO. A page without solid technical SEO is not a page AI will trust and quote either.

Why does GEO matter now?

A growing share of users ask their question directly to an AI and get a single, combined answer. That answer arrives as a citation rather than a click. The result:

  • Sites cited as sources gain visibility and trust.
  • Sites that are not cited get ignored on this surface, even if they technically rank "first."
  • Your brand appearing in AI answers becomes a reputation signal independent of classic ranking.
GEO does not replace SEO; it is a new layer added to it. Classic search traffic continues while AI search grows its share fast.

How do AI engines pick a source?

Generative engines favor trustworthy, easily citable sources when summarizing a topic. Common signals:

SignalWhat is checked
Direct answer structureA question-style heading with a clear 2-4 sentence answer right below
Structured dataJSON-LD schema (FAQ, Article, Organization) so content is machine-readable
Trust and expertiseAuthor info, update date, cited sources (E-E-A-T)
Clear formatBullet lists, step-by-step structures, comparison tables
FreshnessA visible update date on the content

First steps for GEO

  1. Turn questions into headings. Move the questions your audience actually asks into H2/H3 headings and give a short, clear answer right below.
  2. Add an FAQ section and mark it up with FAQPage schema; AI quotes these structures directly.
  3. Make content scannable: bullets, steps, tables. Use citable blocks instead of long paragraphs.
  4. Add trust signals: an author/expert box, an update date and reputable source links for your claims.
  5. Complete your structured data: Organization, Article and, where relevant, Breadcrumb schema.
